2022 Hampton Roads Chamber City Council Endorsements
The Hampton Roads Chamber announced endorsements for candidates in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach this week. Each candidate endorsed is listed below and based off scores from interviews conducted in August and September.
Early voting begins on September 23, 2022 in Virginia. This is the first year that city council elections, previously held in May, have been moved to the November General Election day, due to legislation passed in 2021. Other changes this year, include the City of Virginia Beach moving to a district based voting system. Voters will now vote for a council member that represents their district as opposed to an at-large election.
Every candidate is invited to attend the interview process. Candidates that accept the invitation to interview with the Chamber are then considered for endorsement. This process included a formal interview with all candidates on the issues, specifically topics unique to each city.
The evaluation process and questions focus on the candidates’ support of the business community and policies that would impact the Chamber members. The candidates endorsed this year had responses that would support and improve the business climate for their respective cities.
Election day is November 8, if you need more information on the election, or registering to vote, visit the State Board of Elections Website at www.elections.virginia.gov/casting-a-ballot/early-absentee/
