Colonna’s Shipyard Again Recognized as a “Top Employers for Interns”

The third time Colonna’s has been recognized by the Virginia Talent + Opportunity Partnership (V-TOP) and Region 5

Norfolk, VA (April 3, 2026) Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc. (CSI), proudly announces its selection as a 2026 Top Employers for Interns award recipient by the Virginia Talent + Opportunity Partnership (V-TOP) and Region 5. This is the third time Colonna’s has received this recognition for its commitment to providing high-quality, work-based learning experiences that help shape Virginia’s workforce.

V-TOP’s Top Employers for Interns award is administered by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) and celebrates organizations across the Commonwealth that offer meaningful internship programs that help students acquire valuable workforce experience and skills. Colonna’s Shipyard was again recognized for its continued dedication to mentoring students, fostering hands-on industry skills, and promoting career development pathways.

“We are thrilled to earn the Top Virginia Employers for Interns Award once again,” said Dana Abbattista, Workforce Development Manager. “At Colonna’s, we believe building the future starts with investing in people. We are committed to hands-on learning, mentorship, and real-world experience—empowering the next generation to launch meaningful careers right here in Hampton Roads.”

Emily Salmon, assistant director of strategic planning and policy studies at SCHEV, emphasized the broader impact of internships like those offered by Colonna’s. “Internships are a powerful tool in bridging classroom learning with real-world application,” said Salmon. “Employers like Colonna’s Shipyard help make Virginia a leader in education, talent, and business. By opening its doors to emerging talent, the company strengthens both its own workforce and the broader innovation economy of the region.”

“My time working as an intern last summer at Colonna’s Shipyard was very beneficial, providing me with valuable hands-on experience and the opportunity to learn a great deal about the industry,” said Jacob Basnight, a 2025 intern. “The knowledge and skills I gained during this experience have played an important role in my personal and professional growth. I strongly suggest spending a summer interning at Colonna’s Shipyard.”

Joseph Morris, another 2025 intern added, “Colonna’s isn’t just work; It’s family, a home away from home.”
