From Fast Food to First Response: Norfolk McDonald’s Owner Backs Crew Member’s EMT Dream

Tanee will study to become an EMT thanks to a scholarship from Norfolk McDonald’s owner Mike Meoli, who believes in supporting every employee’s potential and seeing the “golden” opportunities in his people.

Norfolk, VA.  August 8th, 2025 — The Meoli Organization is proud to announce Tanee, a dedicated crew member at McDonald’s, as the recipient of a Meoli Organization Scholarship.

“I first found out I won on June 16, and I was so happy and surprised,” shared Tanee. “A million questions ran through my mind wondering how and why. This scholarship means a lot.”

Tanee Hinslee plans to attend Tidewater Community College to begin working toward her goal of becoming an EMT and making a difference in her community by helping people in their most vulnerable moments. “Being able to help people when they have no one else to turn to is something that really excites me. I want to help people get better and become a better person for the world,” she said.

Mike Meoli, owner and operator of the Meoli Organization’s McDonald’s restaurants, shared, “We are so proud of Tanee and her dedication both to her work and her dreams. Her passion for helping others and her commitment to her future embodies the spirit of our scholarship program. Supporting our employees in reaching their goals — both inside and outside of work — is one of the most meaningful things we can do.”

The Meoli Companies Scholarship was established in 2023 to provide $2,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors employed by Meoli-owned McDonald’s restaurants. Candidates apply online and are evaluated anonymously by a small committee, ensuring selection is based on their essay responses, academic achievement, and community involvement. The scholarship funds are paid directly to the school and can be used at four-year colleges, community colleges, or trade schools — recognizing that not every student’s path looks the same and that all forms of higher learning deserve support.

Tanee has been at McDonald’s for seven months. So far, what she loves about the experience is the chance to connect with her coworkers, learn new skills, and, as she playfully adds, “make some money along the way!”

“I’m the type to go at my own speed rather than rush into a big college. I want to take my time and succeed. I’ve been switching between a lot of careers before settling my heart down on this one, and I just feel like it’s right for me to do,” she said.

When asked what advice she would give to others pursuing their goals, Tanee offered: “Never give up on your dreams, even if sometimes you don’t think they’ll come true. Trust in yourself and work hard to achieve the things you want — and always be yourself.”

When she’s not working toward her goals, Tanee enjoys a McChicken or McCrispy Strips and a custom drink mix of Fanta Orange, Sprite, and fruit punch.

The Meoli Organization is honored to celebrate Tanee’s achievements and looks forward to seeing all that she accomplishes in the future.
