Greg E. Summy Named Recipient of the Eggleston IAnson Professionalism Award for 2022

Vandeventer Black is pleased to announce that attorney, Greg E. Summy, has been named the recipient of the Eggleston/ I’Anson Professionalism Award for 2022 by the Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association (NPBA).
“I am honored by the NPBA and its membership to receive this award. Previous recipients include attorneys that I have respected and admired. To be included with them is truly humbling.”

The Eggleston/I’Anson Professionalism Award honors present and former members of the NPBA who have exemplified the highest standards of professionalism throughout their careers, demonstrating respect for the law, the judicial system, legal profession, clients, court personnel and other counsel along with honesty, candor, fairness and competence before the court and with counsel. The award is intended to recognize and honor personal and professional qualities, reputation and conduct, and leadership activities and service within the bar or the community in general. Award recipients are role models for other attorneys, particularly younger attorneys.

The award is the Association’s most prestigious, named for the two former Chief Justices of the Supreme Court of Virginia hailing from Norfolk and Portsmouth, John W. Eggleston and Lawrence W. I’Anson. Chief Justice Eggleston was a founding partner of Vandeventer Black before taking his place on the Virginia Supreme Court. Summy is the fifth member of Vandeventer Black to receive the award, preceded by John M. Ryan, Charles F. Tucker, Robert L. O’Donnell, and Anita O. Poston.

Summy joined Vandeventer Black in 2021, after retiring from Norfolk Southern Corporation as Deputy General Counsel, where he served for 26 years. He is an experienced attorney who has represented transportation providers for nearly 45 years, with an emphasis on surface transportation companies. While in private practice, he represented carriers before federal and state regulatory agencies and courts, prepared and reviewed a variety of contracts, and provided general legal advice to these entities.

Summy served as Corporate Counsel for a national less-than-truckload carrier and Associate General Counsel for a national truckload carrier of household goods, high-value products, and general commodities moving in dry vans. He is experienced in contractual and regulatory matters, freight loss and damage claims, contract disputes, and a variety of other areas for these clients.
