Newport News Public Schools Demonstrates Significant Academic Growth Across Virginia

Latest Standards of Learning results show gains in reading and mathematics as NNPS continues building momentum for student success.

Newport News Public Schools (NNPS) is celebrating significant academic progress as the division’s latest Standards of Learning results demonstrate gains across elementary, middle and high school.

NNPS is one of just 53 school divisions in Virginia to achieve overall growth in both reading and mathematics. Even more notably, among Virginia’s 132 school divisions, NNPS recorded the fourth-largest increase in overall pass rate statewide.

Divisionwide, reading performance increased 4.24 percentage points, while mathematics increased 3.13 percentage points. Several individual subject areas demonstrated particularly strong gains, including Grade 8 Mathematics, World Geography, World History II and Chemistry.

While the numbers provide an important measure of progress, they represent something much larger.

Behind every percentage point are students putting in the work, educators adapting instruction, administrators examining data, support professionals removing barriers to learning and families reinforcing the importance of education at home.

For the Hampton Roads business community, continued academic growth also contributes to a larger regional priority: preparing the next generation of graduates to become confident, capable learners who are ready for the opportunities and challenges that await them.

Strong schools and strong communities are interconnected. As students strengthen their literacy, mathematics, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, they are building foundations that will follow them into higher education, military service, skilled trades and the regional workforce.

NNPS recognizes that there is still work ahead. Progress is not a finish line, but it is evidence of positive momentum.

The division will continue building on what works, supporting continued academic growth and keeping students at the center of its efforts to prepare the next generation.

Elevate. Empower. One NNPS.
