Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital Foundation Receives $60k Grant to Support Palliative Care Medicine Program

Norfolk, VA – (Jan. 30, 2024) The Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce a $60k grant award from Sentara Cares to support the Macon F. Brock Jr. Palliative Medicine Program at Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital.

The award will fund a new part-time position on the Program’s interdisciplinary team.

“Community partnerships such as these are essential to launch necessary programs such as our new palliative care initiative, and equally important to sustain and grow them to meet future needs,” said Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital President and CEO Thomas J. Orsini. “When the region’s health care delivery leaders come together to support these efforts, the entire community benefits.”

“This contribution reinforces Sentara Cares’ commitment to creating healthier communities through partnerships with organizations and individuals who share those goals through their support of expanding Palliative Care Medicine resources,” said Marissa Galicia-Castillo, MD, FAAHPM, Medical Director, Macon F. Brock Jr. Palliative Care Medicine Program, Lake Taylor’s partner from Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Palliative care is a person-centered, holistic approach to care. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage of a serious illness to reduce pain, symptoms, or stress. Palliative Care is based on the needs and preferences of the patient, not on the prognosis. It helps to improve the quality of life for both the patient and their family.
