Virginia Sports Hall of Fame – Mental Health Workshop
Coaching with Empathy - Wednesday, December 4 at 10 am, Virginia Wesleyan University
(VIRGINIA BEACH, VA) – The Youth Sports Mental Health & Wellness Alliance will host a free professional development workshop, Coaching with Empathy, Wednesday, December 4 on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan University.
The workshop, which has a message targeted to coaches, is open to all stakeholders in youth and college athletics and will be led by longtime college basketball and NBA G-League coach, Bob MacKinnon from the Positive Coaching Alliance. Attendees can expect to learn and discuss topics such as:
- The impact of stress on young people
- The role of empathetic coaches
- How each coach’s own experience impacts their relationship with athletes
- The “PACT” – the framework for applying empathy
- How to apply the “PACT” action steps
Coaching with Empathy will begin at 10 am in the Joan P. Brock Room in Brock Commons at Virginia Wesleyan.
“If you are involved in sports at any level, the mental health of athletes should be top of mind,” says Alliance co-chair, and Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Executive Director, Will Driscoll. “Workshops such as this help us advance the conversation around mental health in sports, which is exactly what we have done through the creation of the Alliance.”
