Langley Federal Credit Union Donates 25K to Hurricane Helene Disaster Relief Efforts Through American Red Cross
Contributions will help the American Red Cross provide shelter, meals, emotional support and supplies.
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Langley Federal Credit Union is donating $25,000 to the American Red Cross supporting relief efforts for the communities severely impacted by Hurricane Helene.
The donation will help the American Red Cross continue to respond to and help people recover from the devastation caused by the Category 4 hurricane. According to the American Red Cross, an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 homes have been destroyed throughout the Southeast and parts of Appalachia. Nearly a week after Helene made landfall, millions are still without electricity, leaving them unable to charge their phones or medical devices and without a way to prepare food.
The American Red Cross opened and continues to operate dozens of emergency shelters providing life-saving services in the hardest-hit areas. They are also driving emergency response vehicles into flood-ravaged communities, providing warm meals, bottles of water and clean-up supplies. These deliveries make it possible for people to access basic essentials for those who lost vehicles or live in areas where roads and stores are destroyed or closed.
“The American Red Cross has continued to work around the clock to deliver compassionate and equitable care to thousands in need of safe shelter and we appreciate the lifesaving work the disaster relief teams are providing to families who have lost everything,” said Jerome Fowlkes, Langley’s chief human resources officer and Langley for Families Foundation’s vice board chair. “Langley’s membership includes residents in Virginia and North Carolina, areas that were hard hit by Hurricane Helene. We are proud to assist the American Red Cross as they continue to provide critical aid to communities that we serve.”
The American Red Cross shared that over 1,000 volunteers have deployed to various communities impacted by Hurricane Helene, and 84 are from Virginia.
“We are so grateful for the support of Langley Federal Credit Union,” said Leslie Crocker, American Red Cross Executive Director for Coastal Virginia. “This generous contribution will allow our teams to continue to provide safe shelter, meals, emotional support and relief supplies. A disaster of this magnitude requires a team effort, and we are so grateful for partners like Langley Federal Credit Union.”
